If you only have a few days in Tanzania but still want to experience real safari magic, a 5-day itinerary is honestly one of the best choices you can make.I’ve designed and guided many safaris over the years, and I can tell you this:
“it’s not about how many days you have, it's about how well those days are planned”.
This guide is based on what actually works on the ground here in Tanzania balancing wildlife, comfort, and driving time so you don’t feel rushed.
Why a 5-Day Safari Works So Well
Many travelers think they need 7–10 days, but the truth is:
If planned correctly, 5 days offers a well-balanced and rewarding safari experience. However, it’s important to understand that this can vary depending on the season. During the wet season, wildlife can be less concentrated and harder to spot, which is why having more days can improve your chances and overall experience.
Overview of the Itinerary
We start the safari with a relaxed drive from Arusha to Tarangire National Park (about 2–3 hours).
Tarangire is famous for:
You’ll enjoy a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park.
By the end of the day, most of my clients are already surprised by how close they get to wildlife.
Overnight at a lodge or tented camp near the park.
Day 2 – Tarangire to Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, we drive towards the world-famous Serengeti National Park.
The journey itself is part of the experience:
Once inside, the landscape opens into endless plains this is the Africa people dream about.
Afternoon game drive before heading to your camp.
This is the heart of your safari.
A full day in the Serengeti gives you the best chance to see:
I always adjust the game drives based on wildlife movement, that's the advantage of a private safari.
Optional for an extra cost:
Hot air balloon safari at sunrise (one of the most unforgettable experiences)
Day 4 – Serengeti to Ngorongoro / Karatu
After a morning game drive, we leave the Serengeti and head towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
This day is more relaxed:
Overnight in Karatu or at the crater rim, depending on your accommodation choice.
Day 5 – Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha
We start early and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the most unique wildlife areas in the world.
Inside the crater, you have a high chance to see:
After the game drive and lunch, we returned to Arusha in the afternoon.
This itinerary can be customized based on your style:
I always help match accommodation with your expectations and budget.
